Dragon helps woman with Multiple Sclerosis
We often hear stories of how Dragon NaturallySpeaking helps users who otherwise would have a hard time using their computer. One such person is Erika Keller, 57, of Rochester, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. These days, Email, Facebook, Twitter, and Skype are all common means of communication for people who live away from their friends and family, but for people like Erika it is not very easy. She loves staying in touch with her nieces through the Internet, but typing is very challenging. Due to a stroke, one side of her body is also not responding the way it should.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking is changing Erika’s life. Using a headset with a microphone, and her Dragon NaturallySpeaking software, she can communicate with her family via the Internet just like anybody else. Well, not quite like anybody else: She no longer needs to do any typing, but controls everything she does with her voice.
Erika is just one of many users who have been helped by Dragon NaturallySpeaking because of medical needs; however, it’s ok to use it just because you’re bad at spelling too… Or just because it’s more fun, of course!
Enhance your PC gaming experience with new Dragon Gaming Speech Pack
Nuance announced today that they are now providing PC gamers with a way to speak their actions while playing games like Call of Duty® Black Ops™, World of Warcraft®, Second Life™, Pacific Poker and Microsoft® Flight Simulator™.
The new Dragon Gaming Speech Pack, based on the award-winning Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software, is designed to transform PC game play. It was created to make gaming more exciting, realistic and competitive, by letting gamers perform auxiliary commands while continuing to control the primary game action with the mouse, keyboard or controller.
Over the last several year, computer games have become more and more realistic as computer graphics and processing power have improved, but gamers have still been restricted by keyboard and hardware controls for game play. Not anymore. With the Dragon Gaming Speech Pack, gamers can interact with their favorite PC games in a completely new way: By voice. This will add a lot to the realistic gaming experience.
Nuance’s Peter Mahoney, senior vice president and general manager for Dragon says:
Many of today’s popular PC games have the production quality of Hollywood blockbusters, creating a realistic gaming experience, combining the latest in graphics, sound, special effects and story-telling to create an emotionally-charged and mesmerizing game play experience. Given the real-world environment the games create, using something as natural as speech recognition creates a truly immersive experience for gamers. Using speech is far easier than learning multiple keystrokes, resulting in intuitive, quicker and more competitive game play.
Dragon Gaming Speech Pack makes game play faster, more fun, and more intuitive, by eliminating the need for gamers to remember complex keystrokes. Instead, they can focus on strategy, and use their voice to simplify control of essential commands.
Depending on the game being played, controlling many essential maneuvers by voice – including ‘crouch,’ ‘take cover,’ ‘equip,’ ‘team chat,’ ‘climb in,’ ‘fold,’ ‘bet,’ ‘up the ante,’ or ‘reset current flight’ – means no time is lost on action commands that might make the difference between winning or losing a game, resulting in a more intense and interactive game play experience.
No matter if you enjoy strategic battle games, exploring virtual worlds, flying a plane or playing poker, Dragon Gaming Speech Pack, which includes a copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Home, will take your gaming skills to the next level.

Dragon Speech Technology to Help with Closed Captioning Project
Did you know that live, or real-time, captions for television are most often produced by specially trained court reporters, called stenocaptioners? These stenocaptioners use a phonetic keyboard attached to a computerized dictionary to translate spoken words into text in a matter of seconds. Naturally, this leads to variations in quality and accuracy, which are a concern to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Using its Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech technology, Nuance is now working on a project in collaboration with WGBH’s National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM), in order to identify and weigh the impact of different kinds of errors in closed captions. Customized language processing, data analysis and benchmarking tools will be put together for the project, which is funded by the US Department of Education.
Marcia Brooks, NCAM project director, describes the project in the following way:
Being able to quantify caption errors has been the missing piece for a range of stakeholders. We expect the Project will help improve captioning quality through better and easier monitoring by caption agencies and networks.
Even though Dragon NaturallySpeaking, as of now, will only be used as a tool in a study, maybe it won’t be long before we see this award-winning software used directly for closed captioning of live TV.
Dragon Dictate for Mac
We have added a new product to our selection of Nuance software, Dragon Dictate for Mac. Dragon Dictate for Mac is powered by the Dragon speech recognition engine – the same engine used for Dragon NaturallySpeaking for PCs (the world’s #1 speech recognition software). Why type and click when you can do anything just by talking?
Just like Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Dragon Dictate comes with a free headset.
