The software now has an available iOS application for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches that turns the devices into a remote wireless mic (note: The app currently only works with the Windows version of the software). Additionally, the latest version makes social networking, such as Facebook and Twitter posts, simpler by including a social network tie-in.

The article further compares Nuance’s PaperPort software to a couple of competitor products, mentioning that it’s hard to beat the leader in the field, Nuance, especially when it comes to lower priced products.

If you already have a scanner and PaperPort wasn’t included with it, you’ll find that spending the money for a copy of PaperPort adds a lot of value to the hardware. Even if your scanner did come with a copy of PaperPort, it’s probably worth the $100 or so to upgrade to the newest version.

As a comparison, while Nuance PaperPort 12 sells for $99 and PaperPort Professional 12 for $199, the competitor products mentioned in the article are both priced around $400.

What this program does is provide developers with easy access to Dragon Mobile SDK, which features the famous Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition capabilities. This way, developers can fully voice-enable basically any app and bring it to the marker quicker than otherwise possible.

It is believed that the new negotiations may have something to do with bringing Dragon NaturallySpeaking technologies to the iPhone. Currently, Nuance offers Dragon Dictation for iPhone, but it is possible that a new partnership between the companies would bring this voice recognition technology natively to iOS.

In order for Apple to create similar technology of its own, the company would not only have to spend a lot of time getting to where Nuance is today, but Nuance also holds key patents for its technology, and is very aggressive in protecting these patents. It is quite obvious why!
